The love for locomotives and their intricate designs is the key reason for the Rail Museum in Delhi to draw such huge crowds even after three decades of its inauguration.
Established in the year 1977, the National Rail Museum, Delhi showcases the evolution of Indian railways from the first rail between Bombay and Thane, till what it is today.
From miniatures of old modeled trains the museum also displays original coaches designed exclusively for eminent personalities.
Collections at the National Rail Museum:
The indoor collection at the museum comprises of model trains that are divided into six galleries starting from the ancient model and gradually showcasing the developments of the industry.

Gallery 1: Displays the initial days of Indian railways.
Gallery 2: Portrays the various freight and passenger cars housing the crockery and utensils used during those days.
Gallery 3: Projects the beauty of Nilgris Mountain railway with a splendid working model of the same made of teak wood.
Gallery 4: Shows the incorporation of technological advancements in the industry through the usage of telecommunicative devices including signaling devices and telephones.
Gallery 5: Displays some of the architectural marvels of the railways including Pamban Rail Bridge in Tamilnadu that connects Rameshwaram to the mainland.
Gallery 6: Displays today’s’ advanced trains along with models of Kolkata metro train, electric train and so on.
